What methods were used to achieve independence? </span></span></h4><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><em>'French and British rule in Africa collapsed not because of an all-out assault from a clearly defined colonized people, but because the imperial system broke apart at its internal cracks as Africans, selectively incorporated into political structures based on citizenship or self-determination, seized the initiative and escalated their demands for power</em>' </span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Frederick Cooper, Africa since 1940</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Methods of the UGCC</strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">As discussed on the previous page, agitation against the colonial administration before 1947 had not been linked to direct independence. The first nationalist movement established in The Gold Coast was 'The United Gold Coast Convention' (UGCC). It was set up in 1947 and its aim was self-government "in the shortest possible time." The founders of this party were mainly lawyers and businessmen such as J.B. Danquah, A.G. Grant, R.A. Awoonor-Williams, Edward Akufo Addo. They called for the replacement of chiefs on the Legislative Council with educated persons and it was also very critical of the colonial administration's handling of the post-war economic situation. Nevertheless, the UGCC were not seeking drastic or revolutionary change; rather they were conservative in nature and pursued dialogue with the British to achieve their aim of self-government at some point in the future. Following the riots in Accra several members of the UGCC were arrested (the UGCC Six which included Nkrumah) as the British administration panicked that riots were being encouraged by 'communist influence'. However the members of the UGCC were invited to make recommendations to the constitutional commission, the Coussey Committee, which was advising the governor on the path to independence.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Coussey Committee included five of the UGCC Six; Nkrumah was excluded.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><strong>Methods of the CPP</strong></span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">After his release from prison, Nkrumah linked up with political youth groups and formed the Committee on Youth Organization (CYO) and established a Newspaper called The Evening News which he used to canvass more support for the UGCC. However the leadership of the UGCC were uneasy with Nkrumah's messages which were seen incendiary and too aggressive. Nkrumah was also fustrated with what he saw as the limited aim of the UGCC (self-government 'in the shortest possible time') and rejected the idea of working with the colonial administration in the Coussey Comittee. He thus broke away from the UGCC calling them 'spineless' and denouncing its members as 'stooges'. The party which he consequently established, <span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">the Convention People's Party </span>(CPP), called for 'self-government now'. and unlike the UGCC which was identified with the educated middle classes, the Convention People's Party identified itself more with ordinary working people. They spread the nationalist message with slogans that had wide appeal such as 'We have the Right to Live as Men'. 'Seek Ye First the Political Kingdom', and 'Self-Government Now.' </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Market women were major supporters of the CPP providing the party with funds and vehicles. The CPP supported three newspapers, the Accra Evening News, the Cape Coast's Daily Mail and Sekondi's Morning Telegraph but also made sure that the CPP could reach people by putting its message in religious terms or using religious symbols.</span><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"></span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Coussey Committee ended up making provisions for greater African representation in government but it stopped short of advocating or even suggesting self-rule. It was thus dismissed by Nkrumah as 'bogus and fraudulant'. On November 20th 1949, he called a mass rally at the West end Arena in Accra where he officially rejected the recommendations of the report. He announced formation of the Ghana Representative Council (GRC) as the principal body to initiate an appeal against the report and demanded the creation of a constituent assembly to create a constitution for immediate self-government for the Gold Coast as a British Dominion. He renewed his nationwide tour, calling on "<em>all men of goodwill' </em>to<em> 'organize, organize, organize'. 'We prefer self-government in danger, to servitude in tranquillity. Forward ever, backward never</em>" he urged. The chant "<em>Self-government now</em>" was taken up in every corner of the country. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Nkrumah had been influenced by the tactics of Gandhi in India and now planned to follow a non-violent Positive Action campaign. In a pamphlet entitled '<em>What I mean by Positive action'</em>, read at the West End Arena, he described Positive Action as “<em>the adoption of all legitimate and constitutional means by which we could attack the forces of imperialism in the country</em>.'</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">On 8th January, 1950 Kwame Nkrumah declared Positive Action day. Party branches were then established everywhere so that the CPP could contest all possible seats in the February 1951 Legislative Assembly election. The CPP also went on a voter registration drive to make sure that those voters who were reluctant to pay the voter registration fee, still signed up to vote.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">In 1951 the CPP gained thirty-eight seats in the popular ballot and Nkrumah won overwhelmingly in Accra. But the CPP, as it campaigned in the general election held under the new constitution, was actually more like a congregation of evangelists. It held 'harvest festivals' to raise cash, prayed that the party would sanctify members through its truth and repeated Nkrumah's maxim, 'Seek ye first the political kingdom and all things shall be added unto you.' Supporters changed 'Ci Pi Pi' and 'Free-Dom'. They saluted with raised arms and open palms, they displayed the party's red white and green colours on flags and on the silk kente cloth of their robes. Kate Gyamfua, <span id="article-123">Deputy National Women’s Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, argues<strong>, '</strong><em>“It is disheartening that 61years down the line, we still talk less of the enormous contributions of our women during the struggle..the ever mobilizing skills of Convention Hannah (HANNAH CUDJOE) who took charge of our struggle any time our men were down during the struggle. Her role in mobilizing a mammoth gathering of Ghanaians from all works of life to petition the colonial powers during the arrest of the big six following the 1948 riot can never be put under the shelf'</em>. Nkrumah's government carried out infrastructure projects, improved housing and water and extended compulsory primary education as well as establishing The University of Ghana at Legon. Many of these initiatives were possible due to the soaring price of cocoa prices which gave the government significantly more income.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">There was some opposition to Nkrumah and the CPP at this time. In the Ashanti region, there was disatisfaction at the fixing of cocoa prices in order to fund development projects. The National Liberation Movement (NLM) was established which used mass political action as well as paramilitary 'action groupers'.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">However, in 1956, the CPP won 71 of the 104 seats with 57% of the national vote. But we don't understand that, it is too high for our English. We understand "now." Again Nkrumah is accessible to everybody.
