These explorers were not specifically looking for slaves but rather for gold and other sources of wealth. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Portuguese were the first to pioneer a series of daring ventures along the African coast; by 1444 they had reached Senegal, and by 1488 they had rounded the southern tip of the continent at the Cape of Good Hope; this meant that the whole of the West African coast line was exposed to European traders.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Wherever these first Portuguese explorers traded in Africa, they encountered African slave systems. Slaves had of course been used in Europe since ancient times and initially the few hundred slaves traded to Europe were only a small part of the many other goods being traded. However this all changed with the development of sugar plantations in the Americas.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Cane sugar had long been a luxury commodity for the upper classes in Europe. Crusaders returning to northern Europe had brought back sugar from the Holy Land and gradually the cultivation of sugar cane was developed in other suitable locations in the Mediterranean such as Cyprus, Crete, Northern Africa and southern Spain. It was grown on plantations, but the workers used in sugar cultivation were generally free. As Europeans ventured to further regions, sugar was planted in new regions such as the Cape Verdi Islands and wherever it was planted it needed plenty of labour. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">When sugar was developed in the islands of SaoTome and Principe in the Gulf of Guinea it seemed logical for Portuguese settlers to turn to the relatively close African coast thus establishing a link between sugar plantations and imported African slaves. In the Americas, the Spanish at first tried various kinds of labour - local Indians, indentured Europeans, free labour. However plantation owners here also decided that African slaves provided the best labour solution given the large numbers of workers required to grow the sugar and then to carry out the arduous processes needed to turn the sugar cane into crude sugar. (<span data-reactid=".cag108e1pw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$3.0">It took 50 tons of sugar cane to make one ton of sugar).</span>Thus both the Portuguese and the Spanish turned to African slaves to solve their need for labour.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The use of slaves in Brazil by the Portuguese in particular caused a massive growth in the slave trade. By the end of the 16th Century, the Brazilian plantations had become completely dependent on imported African slaves. By 1600, around 200,000 Africans had been shipped from West Africa as slaves to various destinations.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The Portuguese were able to gain these large numbers of African slaves by trading with African slave traders; as mentioned above, slavery already existed in West Africa. Now tribal leaders saw that they could gain prized goods from Europeans, such as guns, in return for providing them with slaves. European diseases were especially virulent among the Indians of the coastal zones, which were soon depopulated...with an excellent supply of precious metals, and a positive trade balance with Europe, the Spanish of America could afford to experiment with the import of African slaves...They found African slaves useful for the very reasons that they were kinless and totally mobile labourers. Indians could be exploited systematically but they could not be moved from their lands on a permanent basis. When English, Dutch, or French privateers captured Portuguese ships during Atlantic maritime conflicts, they often found enslaved Africans on these ships; they would then send these slaves to work in their own colonies. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">After Portugal temporarily united with Spain in 1580, the Spanish broke up the Portuguese slave trade monopoly by offering direct slave trading contracts to other European merchants. This was known as the <em>asiento</em> system. The Dutch were the first to take advantage of these contracts, followed by the British and the French. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">European powers so coveted the contract as an opportunity to share in the lucrative Spanish American trade, that the <i>asiento</i>, became an instrument of foreign policy and diplomacy. The contract fell to the Dutch in 1675, to the Portuguese in 1694, to the French in 1701, and, finally, to the English in the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713 as a result of their victory in war.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">However the system of the <em>asiento</em> was abandoned by the Spanish in 1789.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Between 1600 and 1750 an estimated 450,000 Africans were dispatched to Spanish America under the <em>asiento</em> system.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">The asiento system is also explained briefly here:</span></p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/I6KvVaEdP3A" width="640"></iframe></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">As more Europeans got involved in the slave trade, competition grew and conflict was inevitable, culminating in the Anglo-Dutch war of 1665-7. Forts built by the Portuguese and Dutch on the Gold Coast (modern Ghana) were captured by the British in 1667.</span></p><h4><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><span style="color:#000080;">3. Why did Britain become the leading country in the slave trade?</span></span></h4><p data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$2"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><span data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$2.0">By 1700 Britain was emerging as the largest Atlantic slave trading nation, overtaking Portugal and this development was due to the increase in Britain's military and commercial strength. The growth of the British Empire was key in explaining Britain's growing power and its interest in slavery. The British gained control of many of the West Indian islands in the 17th Century; its capture of Jamaica in 1655 was a significant gain as it allowed Britain to challenge Spain in the area. Thereafter Jamaica absorbed vast numbers of Africans, with many others shipped onwards to Spanish settlements in Central America. <span data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$7.0">Selling slaves on to Spanish merchants through Jamaica kept Bristol involved in Atlantic trade when the price of sugar dropped in the 1730s - thus also providing economic security for Britain.</span><span data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$5.0"></span></span></span></p><div class="paragraph" data-perseus-paragraph-index="1"><div class="paragraph"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">Charles II created the <strong>Royal African Company</strong> to trade in enslaved people and African goods. His brother, James II, led the company before ascending the throne. Under both these kings, the Royal African Company enjoyed a monopoly to transport enslaved people to the English colonies. Between 1672 and 1713, the company bought 125,000 captives on the African coast,</span></div><div class="paragraph"></div><div class="paragraph"><p data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$2"><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;"><span data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$2.0"><span data-reactid=".16xukvt3eyw.0.0.0.1:0.1.0.$0.$3.$5.0">Military strength thus enabled Britain to not only to set up and protect its own monopoly in slave trading, but to supply other nations too. This added to the growth of trade. By 1760 Britain possessed 23 colonies.
